The Frenchman was adamant that the hosts should have been awarded a spot-kick for handball against Bees player Vitaly Janelt following a cross from Victor Adeboyejo, who made another good impression from the bench.

On a night when they largely dominated, Brentford secured victory midway through the second half thanks to a header from former Oakwell loanee Ivan Toney, who netted the 11th goal of the campaign so far.

It was an occasion when Barnsley failed to hit the heights of recent performances, but one when they defended well and looked on course for a fourth successive clean sheet on home soil until Toney struck from a corner.

It dashed Barnsley's hopes of a fourth successive win at this level for the first time in almost 13 years.

Ismael, whose side visit Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, commented: "It was like we expected. A very strong opponent. I think since I have been here, it is the best opponent in possession.

"We saw all the quality from this opponent. You cannot press high against them as they are very calm from the keeper to the centre-back and it was like a chess game.

"Both teams tried to enforce their philosophy and we did it well and in such a game - a 50-5-0 situation - set-pieces are always the most important thing.

"At the end, we had to get the penalty and that was the most frustrating thing from this game.

"Sometimes, you have to deal with this in football and we hope next time, we get a decision in our side and that is why you have to accept these decisions. But I was happy about the (tactical) performance.

"We fought to the end and tried to look after the points. It is a good process for my team and staff to see this high level (opponent) and see what you need to beat this opponent.

"We are find solutions with our possibilities and this is the Championship and you have to sometimes adapt and sometimes, you have to play long balls and get second balls and fight for set-pieces.

"We played a team who were complete in set-pieces and very strong in the build-up and counter-press and aggressive."

"We lost a game, but now we must think about the next game on Saturday and show the same passion and belief in our strengths."
