The Reds coach has been drumming home two messages recently: that his side need to cut out the mistakes and show more killer instinct in front of goal. They failed on both counts in a 4-0 defeat at Oakwell.

“I said before the game and after the game in Birmingham and Blackburn, at the moment we make too many mistakes and our opponents punish us, that's why we have to work on this,” he complained. “We play well, we create a lot of situations, we press everywhere but we make the mistakes and they destroy our game, destroy our chance to win the game. This is the analysis from tonight's game.

“We have to analyse the game but not be over-critical. It's a normal process.

“If you look at the table this is our position. To reach the next step we have to improve this area.

“It was maybe also a little bit of tiredness because the last per cent was not there to win the ball, to shift through like in the last two games but it's part of the game, we knew we this. I am happy we have enough time to recover and get fresher heads for the next game. We go again on Wednesday (at home to Wycombe Wanderers).

Bournemouth are for me one of the best teams in the league but tonight the feeling for me is not that Bournemouth were much better, it was more a top team's finishing. We helped them a lot.”

Although his words were quite critical, Ismael did not want to get his team's problems out of proportion.

“I told the guys for sure we are disappointed,” he said. “We made too many mistakes but we have to accept this from the young guys. We know our position in the table, our possibilities in the team.

“When you have so many games in a season you have to accept it's possible to have a night like today.”

There was a spell late in the first half when Barnsley were the better side, but they failed to make their chances count at that time, then conceded a second goal when Dominic Solanke pounced on a mistake by Michael Helik.

“It's always the same music for the last two or three games,” lamented the coach. “We must be effective and avoid the mistakes. We need a new focus, we need all the players motivated for the next time because we don't have time to get depressed.

“We have to stay at a level, not to be euphoric when you win or depressed when you lose.

“In the Championship it's possible to win three or four times in a row but you can lose as well.”
