He has played 32 times for the Toffees, but has fallen out of favour in the last year. The Irish international has not featured once in the Premier League this campaign.

Owls head coach Carvalhal said: “I am very happy as first of all, he will improve the team. He has extra quality.

“He is a player I know very, very well because when he played at Celtic, I was coach of Sporting and I tried to bring him to Sporting. But at that moment, it was not possible.

“But I analysed him and know him very well. He can help us in the second part of the season, I am absolutely sure.”

McGeady, who turns 30 in April, has not featured for Everton since the 5-3 Capital One Cup win at Barnsley at the end of August.

McGeady’s arrival follows on from the capture of Gary Hooper and Joe Bennett and the permanent signing of Jack Hunt.

The Owls are understood to also be in the market for a central midfielder before the 11pm deadline.

Roberto Martinez was happy for McGeady to go out and play first team football.

Martinez said: “Aiden needs to play and it’s a really good opportunity for him to do that in a very demanding fixture list for a team that can get a really good tempo into Aiden for Euro 2016.

“That will make sure he comes back having had a good period of football and of having an impact for whichever team he joins.”
