The arrival of Birmingham-born ex England U17 international Calder, 20, who spent a loan spell in the SPL with Dundee at the start of 2015-16, has provided Rovers with a timely boost - and manager Darren Ferguson is hopeful that another signing will follow next week.

On 6ft midfielder Calder, Ferguson said: “He can play in a variety of positions and different formations and he’s strong, powerful and quick.

“He can play wide midfield, central or as a wing-back and ticks a lot of boxes.

“The attraction to us was that whatever formation we play in certain games, he can fit into most of them and also has lots of energy.

“I have known about him for a while, to be fair and there’s a good possibility we will get another in next week as well.”

Rovers are without the injured James Coppinger and the suspended Richard Chaplow for the weekend game with the Shrews, but Paul Keegan and Andy Butler are in the reckoning, with Ferguson ready to make some big decisions in a bid to find a winning formula after eight league matches without a success.
