it was a crushing defeat for a side embroiled in a relegation battle, and actually could have been worse.

Most of the damage was done in the second quarter of the game, when Wigan scored six goals with virtually no resistance.

No Hull player emerged with any credit but for what it is worth, here is how Stuart Rayner rated the visiting players.

George Long – made a save after 20 seconds. The floodgates opened soon after 4

Matthew Pennington – bawled out by Josh Magennis during the drinks break 3

Reece Burke – no resistance from the Hull defence he was part of in the first half 3

Callum Elder – struggled badly, like everyone else in white 3

George Honeyman – showed his anger in the wrong way 3

Leonardo da Silva Lopes – negligible impact 4

Josh Bowler – hooked early after failing to make an impact on either wing 4

Jon Toral – handed a chance on a plate by David Marshall, his shot hit the only defender 3

Mallik Wilks – was also on the field, but only for the first half 4

Josh Magennis – showed his passion in the wrong way, berating Pennington 4
