AFC Wimbledon 3-2 York City

Nigel Worthington’s first game in charge of York City ended in disappointment as the Minstermen crashed to the odd goal in five in a pivotal game at the bottom of League Two.

York drop to 19th with the defeat, just a point above Wimbledon, and worryingly, just three clear of the bottom two.

Chris Smith scored twice for York in the 29th and 72nd minutes, with both goals equalisers for the Minstermen.

Mat Mitchell-King fired in the first for the Dons on 21 minutes before Smith’s first leveller and then Brennan Dickenson scored, but within 10 minutes Smith had headed a second equaliser.

However, Harry pell’s long-range effort 11 minutes from time was the final act and Worthington’s men could not find another way back.

Worthington said: “I thought the players participation in that was outstanding they kept going right until the final whistle, which showed a lot of character so I was delighted with that.

“But if you score two goals away from home you should be getting something from the game.

“There was a lot to deal with but we dealt with it and things we’ve been working on, a lot of them came off but there’s one or two we’ve got to continue to work on and improve on to make better.

“But their commitment and their energy, I can’t fault the players at all.”
