Brobbel and Taft join and strengthen York

YORK City should give debuts to two new signings today after manager Nigel Worthington moved to strengthen his squad.

He completed a one-month loan deal for Middlesbrough midfielder Ryan Brobbel yesterday barely 24 hours after finalising a similar deal for Leicester City
defender George Taft.

Both will immediately come into the reckoning for today’s trip to Exeter as the struggling Minstermen seek to deliver their first win in five games.

It will also mark their professional debut as neither of the 20-year-olds has yet appeared for their Championship clubs.

Worthington said: “George is 6ft 4ins or 6ft 5ins tall and he will give us a bit more presence and strength in depth at the back.

“He’s come here to get first-team experience and he’s a very good, young player.

“Ryan is an attacking player who can play wide and give us cover for the next month because of the injuries we have.”

Richard Cresswell is out with an eye injury.

So, too, are David McGurk (hamstring) and the suspended Ryan Bowman.

York have yet to pick up a point or even a goal from their two away games so far while Exeter have started brightly and won both of their home outings.

“We have had two away defeats and we have got to put that right by being more resilient and rough and ready,” added Worthington.

York now have four loan signings on their books with Blackpool’s Chris Kettings and Preston’s Ben Davies the others.

Sides are allowed to include a maximum of five in their matchday squad.

But, as Monday’s deadline for permanent transfers looms, Worthington may invest further to bolster his squad’s chances in League Two.

“I am only allowed one more loan signing, but if somebody was out there who we wanted to do something with on a permanent basis, we would certainly look at that,” said the ex-Northern Ireland manager.

York have allowed midfielder John McReady to join Halifax after he struggled to make an impact at Bootham Crescent following his move from Darlington last summer.
