The Minstermen doubled their lead when Michael Coulson turned in the penalty area and fired home.

Scot Bennett latched onto a loose ball from Jimmy Keohane’s corner to pull a goal back bu York proved too strong.

Nigel Worthington said: “It’s three great points and we’ve had to work very hard for it. It’s probably the hardest I’ve worked to try and keep them going and get them over the line.

“In the first 20 to 25 minutes it was how we like to play, at the tempo we like to play. We got two goals but then we got comfortable and it got tired and scrappy.

“When you take your foot off the accelerator it’s hard to get it back on, but you’ve got to give the players credit.

“We stuck at it and saw the job through and it’s a fantastic three points.”
