Full-time: York City 1-3 Wycombe Wanderers

IT was the day York fans have waited eight years for - a game in the Football League - but it did not go to plan.

Last season’s Blue Square Bet Premier play-off winners were beaten by Wycombe Wanderers, who were relegated from League One, in a tricky opener for Gary Mills’s side at Bootham Crescent.

Chris Smith had the honour of leading York back into Football League action.

Smith was partnered in the heart of defence by Chris Doug as manager Gary Mills named the same side which had lost on penalties in the League Cup at Doncaster.

Chances were at a premium but York were unlucky to go behind in the 28th minute when Matt Bloomfield’s shot deflected in off Doig.

There was nothing lucky about Wycombe’s second close to the break as Sam Wood hit a long-range drive over Michael Ingham.

Jason Walker was credited with York’s first goal after turning in Jon Smith’s shot but Stuart Beavon had already made it 3-0 a minute earlier in the 53rd.
