Jones and Wilcox in need of a victory for differing reasons

ROCK-SOLID as central defenders and most definitely bracketed as leaders, Rob Jones and Russ Wilcox share a bit in common.

But both will be in opposing dug-outs tonight, cajoling their charges for a victory which each requires for wholly different reasons.

Under-fire from a section of home supporters of late, Wilcox knows that only the balm of victories will soothe some growing disquiet, while Jones will be anxious for another win to boost his own hopes of landing the full-time position at Rovers. Publicly at least, Jones is not saying that, stressing that his only concern is for the club and not self.

Jones has been in charge of five matches so far, but while he is on the short-list to replace Paul Dickov, he is behind the likes of Darren Ferguson and Lee Clark in the betting. He is prepared for whatever decision is reached upon by the Rovers hierarchy, but he knows what he wants if he has his way.

On the prospect of it being his last game in charge, he added: “It could be, it could not be..

“If someone else comes in, I give whoever it is my whole backing and got back to my playing contract and job as under-21s manager and get on with it.

“I am only 35 and have a lot of years to become a manager of a football club. But do I want it right now, yes of course, I do.”

Victory for York would help alleviate some of the pressure that has built on Wilcox during a five-game winless run.

The City chief and ex-Rovers captain is boosted by the return of Vadaine Taylor and Dave Winfield after suspension, though loanee Rhys Turner is ineligible.

Last six games: York WDDLLD; Doncaster LLDLDW.

Referee: G Eltringham (Tyne and Wear).

Last time: York City 0 Doncaster Rovers 1; August 12, 2014; Capital One Cup.
