Minstermen return with point from play-off rivals Harriers

York City battled their way to a hard-earned point against fellow promotion hopefuls Kidderminster Harriers.

York began the game in fourth place with Kidderminster fifth and the importance of the encounter was evident from the kick-off, fine defending preventing goals at both ends. York led until six minutes from time but a draw was a fair result in an absorbing game.

Kidderminster had the better of the first half and York had to thank some good defending for not falling behind.

Danny Pilkington shot across goal in the first York attack but it took a goal-line clearance from Chris Smith to stop Nick Wright from putting Kidderminster ahead.

Adriano Moke crossed the ball in a York attack, the ball glanced off Mickey Demetriou and Tony Breeden did well to save at the expense of a corner.

There was another close shave for York on 40 minutes when Tyler Storey shot and Danny Parslow cleared off the line with Kidderminster appealing for handball.

York took the lead after 57 minutes when Jon Challinor centred from the byline for Smith to leave Breeden helpless with a fine header into the top corner.

Lee Hendrie shot across goal and it took a magnificent 70th-minute save by Michael Ingham to prevent Jamille Matt from equalising.

It was Ingham to the rescue again with a superb save from Tony Malbon.

Kidderminster equalised after 84 minutes when James McQuilkin’s free-kick went through a crowd of defenders and, with Ingham not moving, the ball crept in at the far post.

Challinor was fortunate to escape a red card for a foul on McQuilkin just before time. Blinkhorn came close to winning the game but he saw his shot deflected over the bar in added time.
