So, when the York City manager explains what psychological difference extending the current three-game unbeaten run can make then it is worth his players pricking up their ears.

“We have gone three games unbeaten and that is a start,” said Wilcox. “We want to keep the run going, especially with three home games to come after Notts County.

“Keeping the scoreboard ticking along breeds confidence and it is amazing what difference going into games on the back of a five- or six-game unbeaten run can make.

“The team feels like it can’t be beaten and that is a great mindset to be in. I saw that at Scunthorpe. We went six months without losing and the players went out every Saturday believing they would win. Or, at the very worst, not lose.

“We are a long way off that sort of run, but everything has to start somewhere and we are moving in the right direction.”

Wilcox was at Meadow Lane on Tuesday night when Crawley Town were beaten 4-1, a result that took the Magpies above York in the table.

He added: “Notts County were among the favourites to go back up and have spent a lot of money; (Izale) Mcleod went for six figures. I went to watch them on Tuesday night and they were excellent. They have got on a bit of a run at home, having won three games and scored 10 goals.

“That is what I meant when I say how much just a few games unbeaten can make a difference.”

County have the second worst defence in League Two, only Carlisle – who drew 2-2 against York a week ago – having let in more.
