The former Scunthorpe boss, seven days after being controversially sacked by the Iron, has made a lightning-fast return to football after Nigel Worthington resigned earlier this week.

Wilcox, 50, who has formerly been an assistant-manager at Sheffield Wednesday and played for Hull City and Doncaster Rovers in his playing career, takes on a side with just one win in their last 17 games in all competitions and says the current run of form needs to be arrested.

Wilcox, who will be assisted by Worthington’s number two Steve Torpey, said: “Must do better is the message. We have obviously underachieved. One win in 12 is not good enough.

“If everyone gives a little bit more individually, then collectively we will all benefit.”

“York is a fantastic club run by superb people and that is the key to it. It’s a family club I have always admired and when I have visited the club, I have always been welcomed with open arms.

“There are people in place who can move this club forward. We are at the wrong end of the table, we know that and I know Steve Torpey well from my Scunthorpe days and hopefully we can work well as a team and take this club forward.”

Wilcox’s first game in charge will be Saturday’s home clash with Shrewsbury Town.
