Anthony Straker’s sweet 67th-minute strike looked to have given the Minstermen victory, but Marc Richards’s last-minute goal saw the Cobblers grab a point.

York had conceded stoppage-time goals in each of their first two games – away to Tranmere in the league and at home to Doncaster Rovers in the Capital One Cup.

“If you don’t take chances you always leave yourself open to what has happened in the first three games of the season,” admitted Worthington.

“It’s the same thing game-in, game-out – by hook or by crook we’ve got to be more focused to get the ball in the back of that net.

“You can live with conceding a late goal once, it’s hard to take the second time but for three times in a week it simply isn’t right, so we need to improve our concentration.

“The first 15 minutes are the difference; we could have been two or three goals to the good early on – and from then on you’re managing the game.

“If you don’t take your chances you leave yourselves open to get stung, and that’s what has happened.”

Cobblers chief Chris Wilder was relieved his side came away from Bootham Crescent with a point. “I always felt we had a goal in us and we’ve brought Marc Richards to the club to produce things like that for us” he said.
