They went above visitors Tranmere by recording only their second home win of the season at Bootham Crescent as lone striker Fletcher scored in each half.

Fletcher, the only change from the side which had drawn 2-2 at Luton in midweek, struck in the 20th minute, sliding the ball home after Michael Coulson’s free-kick rebounded across to Russell Penn, who teed up Bradley Halliday for a low drive which the striker converted.

Fletcher almost made it 2-0 when he nipped in front of his marker at the near post but Owain Fon Williams got a boot to the low shot.

The Tranmere goalkeeper also made a smart save down to his right in stoppage time from Josh Carson.

York took a grip after the break and Fletcher made it 2-0 in the 58th minute cutting in from the right past both central defenders before firing past a diving Fon Williams.

It could easily have been three but Malvind Benning struck the left-hand post and Josh Carson the outside of the right as the ball bounced across to him.

Fon Williams also denied Fletcher as the striker attempted to convert a through ball and the goalkeeper made a couple of other saves as York finished on top.
