York City's first summer signing may be a non-league promotion expert but he brings vital EFL experience

York City have made their first signing back in the Football League.

Midfielder Mark Shelton has won promotion out of league football three times in his career, but it will be his 91 appearances in League Two which will be of most use to the Minstermen.

The now 29-year-old was a key part of the Barnet team which beat York to promotion from the Conference 12 months ago, adding to promotions at Salford City and Hartlepool United.

But last season he made 40 appearances for the Bees in League Two, scoring eight goals as they finished the season in eight.

A product of the youth systems at Nottingham Forest and Burton Albion, he also played league football for Salford and Pools, and in non-league for Ilkeston, Alfreton Town, Woking and Oldham Athletic.

Shelton's final appearance for Barnet was in North Yorkshire, as they won at Harrogate Town on the final day of the season to ensure the Sulphurites will swap places with York for 2026-27.

His Barnet contract expires at the end of June, at which point he will officially become a York player.

Stuart Maynard's side won a fiercely-contested Conference title race in April to return to the Football League after 10 years in the National League.
