Club: Michael Cardwell just gets better of experienced Dave Slingsby

MICHAEL CARDWELL defied the odds when he played off four shots fewer than his actual handicap to win first prize at Vincent Gell’s Captain’s Weekend at Hallowes GC.

Cardwell forfeited eight strokes over the 36 holes, with the competition having a handicap threshold of 22, but still returned two net rounds of 70 for a 140 aggregate.

He just managed to edge 73-year-old Dave Slingsby, a five-handicapper who also carded net 70 each day, but lost out to Cardwell on a last-nine countback.

“This was a great performance over two days from a new and inexperienced member, but with a real passion for the game,” said the captain.

“And what can you say about Dave Slingsby except this was a top quality golfing display from a very experienced player. Well done both of them.”

The members who played – and partied – over Captain’s Weekend helped raise over £2,200 via hole-in-one donations, a raffle and auction.

The total raised for Macmillan Cancer Support now exceeds £,2600 and a target of £,3500 looks well within reach by the end of the season.
