Dave Lupton leads 15-strong Yorkshire Union contingent seeking Logan Trophy win

EAGLESCLIFFE’S Dave Lupton shot a level-par 72 to lie sixth after day one of the English Men’s Mid Amateur Championship at Northumberland GC.

Brancepeth’s Richard Aisbitt leads with a 67 in the chase for the Logan Trophy in a competition open to players over the age of 35.

Lupton had three birdies and a double bogey to be out in 36 against the par of 37. Coming home he produced one birdie and two bogeys.

Fulford’s Jamie Miller is one shot back of him after a 73 which saw him open with 10 consecutive pars.

Dropped shots followed at holes 11 and 13 before he sandwiched another bogey with birdies at 15 and his final hole.

Moortown’s Stephen East, recently crowned Yorkshire’s Seniors champion, was two over par going out and level coming home for a 74.

Edward Battye (Bradley Park) was two under through eight holes, but five bogeys in a row from the ninth led to a 75.

Pike Hills’ Martin Brown also shot 75 which included four bogeys and one birdie.

Four Yorkshire Union competitors carded 77 – Fulford’s Rick Hewitt, Barry Downing (Hallamshire), and Lindrick duo Jamie Shepherd and Richard Hodgkinson.

Two of them, Hewitt and Sheffield Union team captain Hodgkinson, were able to mark down on their card an eagle 3 at the ninth hole, where Downing took five shots more for a ‘snowman’ eight.

Hornsea’s Leigh Gawley is on 79, one ahead of his clubmate Rees Brown and Craig Bradley (Garforth).

Bradley had an outward 44, but showed great composure to come home in one-over 36.

Fulford’s Andy Evans shot 82, Andy Crawford (Hallamshire) 83 and Geoff Thorpe, of Hallowes, 86.

The leading 45 competitors and ties after Saturday will go through to play in Sunday’s final round.
