Huddersfield’s Marsh starts English Amateur title defence at Alwoodley

Huddersfield GC’s Nick Marsh gets the defence of his English men’s amateur championship underway at 9.20am at Alwoodley GC today, writes Chris Stratford.

Marsh is one of 42 Yorkshire players in a field of 288 which will also play at Pannal GC 
in today’s and tomorrow’s 36-hole stroke play phase of the competition.

Contestants will play a round at each of the courses, with the top 64 and ties progressing to the match play stage of the championship.

Matches get underway at 7am today with Moor Allerton’s Tom Murray one of the first players off at Alwoodley.

Bondhay’s Dan Wasteney is the first Yorkshire Union player to see action at Pannal, teeing off at 7.20am.

The three-player groups continue to go out until 3.30pm, with England international Joe Dean (Lindrick) and Wath’s Nick Poppleton in the final threesome at Alwoodley.

Also in the field is Ashley Chesters (Hawkstone Park) who tied 12th in the Open last Monday on nine under par.

Spectators are welcome, and there is no entrance fee throughout the competition, which concludes on Saturday with a 36-hole match play final.

The English Amateur championship is England Golf’s oldest tournament and was first played in 1925. Previous winners include Sir Nick Faldo, Tommy Fleetwood, Paul Casey and Sheffield’s Danny Willett.
