YORKSHIRE Veterans’ Ladies Golf Association’s Fourball Better Ball event at Pontefract GC saw the association’s captain Julia Smith and team player Sandra Paul snatch victory from a pair who had sat atop the leaderboard for most of the day.

But they had to play some splendid golf to prise first place from Selby pair Gill Green and Vera Tasker.

Smith and Paul, who are both five handicap and were the last pair out, teeing off at 2.30pm, scored 42 points with the assistance of five gross birdies along the way.

Green and Tasker (18 and 30 handicap respectively) had been leading the field – which comprised 64 pairs - for most of the day on 41 points.

Third one point back of them were Sue Snow and Janet Wood, from Otley (21 and 22 handicap) and fourth were Hessle’s Linda Wills and Jan Barnes (15 and 20 handicap) also on 40 points.

The next YVLGA competition is a five-club Individual Stableford at Horsforth GC on Monday, July 27.
