Seven of them will be smarting from their experience at the Amateur Championship in Scotland this week, six of them in particular after failing to make it through the stroke play portion of the event into the match play stage.
Lindrick’s Joe Dean was the sole exception, but he, unfortunately, lost by one hole in the first round, to France’s Antoine Razner.
Nick Marsh (Huddersfield), Daniel Wasteney (Bondhay), William Whiteoak (Shipley), Jamie Bower (Meltham), Dean and his Lindrick clubmate Jonathan Thomson and Daniel Brown (Bedale) will be the players competing in a second successive national championship.
They are joined by Ben Hutchinson (Howley Hall), Ben Brewster (Bawtry), a third Lindrick contestant, Nathan Fell , Lewis Hollingworth (Tankersley Park) and Martin Brown (Pike Hills).
The 72-hole stroke play event gives Marsh and Daniel Brown, members of GB & Ireland’s Walker Cup squad, an immediate opportunity to make amends for last week ahead of the 10-man team being selected for September’s contest against the USA at Royal Lytham & St Annes. Marsh will also be looking to complete an English double as holder of the match play crown.
A total of 156 players are in the field. and the champion will be crowned on Saturday, June 27 and will later be re-presented with the trophy by sponsor Your Golf Travel’s ambassador Lee Westwood, Ryder Cup player and tournament winner on tours around the world.
Seventeen countries have representation in the Brabazon, including Australia, New Zealand and the USA. Marsh and Daniel Brown will be alongside another nine of the 16-strong provisional Walker Cup squad.
The Brabazon Trophy past champions include two players who went on to win major titles – Sandy Lyle, who won both the Open and Masters, and Charl Schwartzel, who has also triumphed at Augusta.
This year’s field includes the double European amateur champion Ashley Chesters (Hawkstone Park), who was joint runner-up last year on 13 under par – one shot behind the winner, Ben Stow, who has since turned professional.
