Yorkshire golf – club news: Flying start points Burger towards final success

CATHY BURGER laid the foundations for victory in Huddersfield GC’s Ladies Medal Final with an impressive start to her round that saw her drop just one shot to par in the first four holes.

Twenty-five handicapper Burger - who also won June’s Huddersfield Spoon - parred the first, second and fourth and only let one shot slip at the long sixth on her way to a net 75 and victory by one shot from Cherrie Myers.

The 36-handicap runner-up secured second spot over Kathryn O’Hara thanks to a back nine which saw her improve on her outward tally by six shots. Mel Dixon and Dave Taylor’s excellent net score of 68 saw them win Rotherham GC’s Betterball Vase by four shots from Gary Sykes and John Ledbury.

The margin of victory in the mixed competition was even more emphatic as Roy and Louise Jackson alongside Paul and Jo Short amassed a scintillating 93 points.

They finished nine clear of runners-up Rob and Helen Jones with Chris and Bunty Bird.

Victory in Division One of the Thursday medal went to Pete Mogan with a net 67. A net 73 meant John Knowles claimed the Division Two honours.

Jim Turner was victorious in Division One of the Saturday medal as he carded a 67 to win by one. In second place was Paul Short.
