Yorkshire golf: Huddersfield GC enjoy successive YLCGA Inter Club triumphs

And victory at Brough was made even sweeter by beating their big rivals Woodsome Hall in the final.

In the morning’s semi-finals, Huddersfield beat Ganton while Woodsome Hall defeated Pannal.

Both matches ended 4-3 with the winning sides conceding the remaining matches after reaching four points thus enabling the teams to lunch before playing again.

The final was a keenly-contested affair as was illustrated by the match between Woodsome’s Rochelle Morris - ranked No 4 in England after a highly successful summer - and Yorkshire county team-mate Hannah Holden.

The Huddersfield player threw a series of birdies at Morris to force sudden-death, but Morris eventually prevailed at the 21st hole.

Huddersfield’s other team members were Megan Clarke, Megan Lockett, Pat Wrightson, Sandra Paul, Harriet Richardson and Holden’s sister Georgia.

Non-playing captain Jean Gee was delighted with their success and also paid tribute to Claire Greenwood, Alison Tracey, Joan Webb - last year’s lady captain at Huddersfield - Anita Mandl and Christine Barnett who helped the team qualify for the finals.

“The young girls are so busy with their county commitments that I don’t get to see too much of them so it was lovely to be involved,” said Gee, 26 years a member at Huddersfield GC and the current lady captain. A team player Liz Roberts will take on the role in 2016.

The Woodsome team had three generations involved - captain Anne Taylor had her mother Liz Cooper caddying for her while her daughter Emma was playing in the match behind.

Wrightson’s next task is to head to Lithuania to act as non-playing captain for England in the European Senior Ladies’ Championship.

Beaten semi-finalists Pannal received consolation in the form of the Brough Trophy as the top qualifier in the competition.

The Scratch Second Division competition saw Wakefield defeat Moortown, the latter having been top qualifiers. Sue Johnson provided a trophy some years ago for the top qualifier in this division and was present to hand it over to Moortown captain Sue Rogerson.
