The championship crowned an excellent season for Bower who, as well as reaching the semi-finals of the English amateur championship and placing sixth in the European championship, won his first senior appearance for England in the recent Home Internationals.

His success has been complemented throughout the club, from its junior to its scratch section.

“The scratch team really kicked off the year of success by gaining promotion from the Fifth to the Third Division in the Yorkshire county championship,” said the club’s professional Simon Race.

The three-man team for that event of Graham McLean, Tom Hunt and Johnny Fleetwood also provided the core of the league scratch team.

Meltham ended a wait of several years for the Halifax-Huddersfield Union First Division scratch team title, and the trio also put in fine individual performances in the union’s stroke play championship.

McLean took the title for the first time, one of the few prizes that had eluded him within the union.

Fleetwood finished third behind his club-mate and Hunt took the junior prize and placed sixth overall.

Hunt was also part of Meltham’s team which won the union’s junior League for the third year in succession, and he and the junior captain Sean Campbell are through to the final of the union foursomes to be played later this month.
