He had sandwiched a birdie at the third with bogeys at the first and fourth holes and went two over for his round after a bogey at the 12th before his birdie barrage.

Finch, who has regained his card after finishing 142nd on the Order of Merit this year, tied 22nd.

He shot rounds of 69 66 70 73 71 71 and had three birdies in four holes from the 12th to ease his nerves.

After one birdie and one bogey on the outward nine he suffered a double bogey at the 10th, but his experience, which includes him twice winning on Tour, shone through in his impressive finish.

Hanson, who had shared the fourth-round lead alongside Gavins, endured the most nerve wracking of endings, but the work done in the first five rounds enabled him to survive a closing six-over-par 78.

He was two over after the front nine with one birdie and three bogeys, but followed a bogey at the 10th with a double three holes later.

A further shot was shed at the 16th leaving him with no room for manoeuve, but the Huddersfield player parred the last two holes to tie for 24th place (70 63 66 71 73 78).
