Hague and Steel end Harrogate fightback against leaders Ionians

Leaders Hull Ionians beat Harrogate 29-14 at Brantingham Park after a strong first half-hour saw them race into a 17-0 lead.

It only took seven minutes for Hull to score their first try with second-row Joseph Makin crashing over for scrum-half Isaac Green to convert.

The home side were in again with lock Joseph Sanders finding space to touch the ball down and once again Green added the extras.

Green added a penalty before Harrogate hit back through second-row Tom Harvey and stand-off Callum Irvine as they enjoyed a good patch and brought the score back to 17-14. But tries from No 8 Daniel Hague and left winger Jonathan Steel sealed the points for Ionians.

Injury-hit Hull kept hosts Stockport pinned firmly to the bottom, but needed all their reserves to scrape a 33-30 win after going 17-0 down in the first hour.

Hull pulled back a try by prop Adam Tamanis after 37 minutes and fly-half James Cameron, back after two weeks’ absence, converted, but another try right on half-time gave Stockport a 22-7 interval lead.

From the restart, Hull winger Jim Broadley touched down for Cameron to convert, but Stockport made it 30-14 before Hull finally eased towards victory with tries by back-row Ben Sullivan and centre Alex Heard, both converted.

The winning score came on 73 minutes when scrum-half Oliver Hardisty raced over, and Hull held on in a tense finale after having lost Jamie Clark and James Kirk with concussion.

A last-gasp try from captain Nick Sharpe secured a bonus point for Huddersfield in a 21-19 defeat at Sedgley Park.

Huddersfield made a bright start and led after five minutes when Yorkshire Carnegie dual registration winger Nick Rawsthorne raced over.

The hosts came back to lead 11-5 at half-time but Rawsthorne struck again seven minutes after the break with Chris Bell adding the extras.

Sedgley added 10 quick points with a converted try and penalty with eight minutes to go but
No 8 Sharpe pounced and Bell’s kick ensured Huddersfield got some reward.

Winger Harry Hudson scored two quick tries and Stephen Depledge a conversion and a penalty but hosts Broadstreet hit back to defeat Otley 37-27.

Fly-half Ben Palmer’s 100 per cent success rate proved the telling factor, and Broadstreet also scored 17 points whilst having men in the sin-bin. They drew level but a try from winger Alex Beaumont restored Otley’s lead, Palmer kicking a penalty just before the break.

Broadstreet took command with tries from Nathan Tilsley and Jefferey Gregson plus a penalty and Otley’s final try came in the 74th minute from Beaumont.
