Matthew extends his rankings lead

SQUASH: Sheffield’s Nick Matthew has extended his lead at the top of the PSA world rankings list thanks to last weekend’s victory over world No 2 Ramy Ashour in the final of the North American Open.

World champion Matthew beat his Egyptian rival Ashour 11-9 11-5 8-11 8-11 11-6 in a gruelling 85 minutes, avenging his defeat at the same stage in the JP Morgan Tournament of Champions, the first 2011 World Series event in New York in January.

As a result, the 30-year-old Yorkshireman moves into his third successive month as the world’s top player.
