Newcastle Falcons 29 Leeds Carnegie 30: Jarvis hands Leeds lifeline

Leeds Carnagie are alive and well in the Premeirship survival race after Adrian Jarvis’s 79th-minute drop goal edged them past their relegation rivals in a tense thriller, writes Nick Westby.

Jarvis kicked the ball through the posts from 35 metres to give Leeds their first away win for a 12 months but more crucially a pivotal four points that takes them above Newcastle at the bottom.

Leeds have only three games left while Newcastle have four, but Leeds have the psychological edge and the momentum after a third win in five.

They also scored three tries through Steve Thompson and Pete Wackett in the first half - at one stage they trailed 20-7 - and Garethe Hardy in the second.

Newcastle scored first-half tries through Micky Young and Jeremy Manning, and Jimmy Gopperth scored 17 points, including a 76th-minute penalty that looked to have won it.

But Jarvis stepped up with the late winner to add to the 12 points he had already scored with the boot.
