* Philip Hindes, Jason Kenny and Callum Skinner got Britain’s track cycling campaign off to a flying start with gold in the team sprint, beating New Zealand in the final in an Olympic record 42.440 seconds. It was Kenny’s fourth Olympic gold.

* Katherine Grainger became the joint most decorated female British Olympian of all-time by winning women’s double sculls silver with Vicky Thornley. It was the 40-year-old’s fifth Olympic medal, matching the number won by Kitty Godfree, nee McKane, a tennis player in the 1920s.

* Britain won a shock silver in the men’s rugby competition, winning their semi-final against South Africa before going down 43-7 in the final to Fiji, who won the first medal for their country in any sport.

* Canoeist David Florence bounced back from finishing last in the C1 final two days earlier to take silver in the C2 class alongside Richard Hounslow.

* Andy Murray survived a scare against Fabio Fognini as he fought back from the brink against the Italian to win their third-round match 6-1 2-6 6-3. Murray and Heather Watson won their opening mixed doubles match 6-3 6-3 over David Ferrer and Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain. Johanna Konta was beaten 6-1 6-2 by second seed Angelique Kerber in the quarter-finals.

* Michael Phelps won his 22nd Olympic gold medal and fourth consecutive 200m individual medley title in 1:54.66 seconds. It was his fourth Rio gold. Chloe Tutton finished an agonising fourth in the women’s 200m breaststroke final.

* Natalie Powell’s hopes of a judo medal in the -78kg category were ended by defeat in the repechage to Germany’s Luise Malzahn.

* Shooters Amber Hill and Elena Allen begin their quest for a podium in the women’s skeet around at 1pm.

* Jessica Ennis-Hill gets her defence of her heptathlon title going alongside team-mate Katarina Johnson-Thompson in the 100m hurdles at 1.35pm. Jo Pavey, at her fifth Olympics, is also in action in the women’s 10,000m.

* Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro lead Britain’s charge for dressage team gold in the equestrian at 2pm.

* Murray takes on American Steve Johnson in the quarter-finals of the men’s singles.

* Just after 3pm defending pairs champions Helen Glover and Heather Stanning will be seeking to retain their title, while there is also British interest in the women’s lightweight double sculls and the men’s four.

* The men’s team pursuit final will see Sir Bradley Wiggins go for what would be his eighth Olympic medal, and fifth gold at 10.20pm. The women’s team sprint final gets under way at 10pm.
