Andy Murray hobbles off at Queen's as Red Rose blooms at Ilkley

Lancastrian teenager Ella McDonald headlined a day of British tennis success in Yorkshire at the Lexus Ilkley Trophy.

Eighteen-year-old McDonald, who hails from Preston, came past the Netherlands’ Arianne Hartono, ranked 158 in the world, in three sets 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 6-2.

On securing a victory against a player 10 years and 600 ranking places her senior, McDonald said: “I thought it was a really good performance.

“I came from behind in the first set and then a close second, and luckily got the front edge at the beginning of the third.”

“It’s nice to be up here for a nice tournament.

“It’s just a nice venue as well, so it’s good to have a tournament up here. I know some people in the crowd, so it’s good to see some familiar faces.”

More Red Rose success followed in the shape of Bolton-born Amarni Banks (21) who pulled off a shock win against Japan’s Mai Hontama.

Banks, who is ranked at 268 by the WTA, won in comfortable fashion against the 24-year-old ranked just outside the world’s top 100.

Nineteen-year-old Londoner Ranah Akua Stoiber, ranked 678, joins them in round two after beating Australian Open junior champion Renáta Jamrichová (16) in a final set tiebreak.

In the men’s draw, Hertfordshire’s Charles Broom continued his excellent grass court form with a win in the opening match on centre court.

After making last week’s Nottingham final, 26-year-old Broom, ranked 235 in the world, won his Ilkley first round in straight sets against experienced Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin, who was once ranked 39 in the world.

“I love coming back here and playing,” Broom said on returning to Ilkley for a third consecutive year.

“I like the people, I’ve stayed the last couple of years with host families and they’ve been so nice.

“The people in general here really make the tournament special, I can’t thank everyone enough for making this tournament as good as it is.”

Southend’s Ryan Peniston (28) fell in his first round match while London’s Arthur Fery exited in the second round to number two seed Lloyd Harris of South Africa.

After rain delays earlier in the week, the men’s doubles got underway with Leeds’ Luke Johnson (30) winning his first round with Indian partner Siriam Balaji (34).

Richard Gasquet (37) one of the tournament’s headline stars as a former world number seven, was beaten by French compatriot Harold Mayot (22).

Andy Murray, meanwhile, was forced to retire injured from his second-round match in the cinch Championships at Queen’s Club after only five games.

The former world No 1 was making what is likely to be his farewell appearance at the prestigious pre-Wimbledon tournament.

But, after his very first serve of the match against Australian Jordan Thompson, Murray’s hip and right leg seemed to give way.

The official reason given for his retirement was a back injury. Murray, pictured, has said he will retire later this summer.
