Danny Willett bids for Open return alongside club pros and amateurs, but not Dustin Johnson

Everyone from major winners to amateurs, tour pros to club pros will tee it up at four courses across Britain today, vying for a place at next month’s Open Championship.

Yorkshire representatives at Final Qualifying span the whole spectrum, with 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett of Sheffield teeing off at West Lancs in the group behind Josh McAspurn, an amateur from Crosland Heath.

While Willett is trying to get back to the top table, McAspurn is one of a number of amateurs trying to live the dream by making it all the way to Royal Birkdale from July 16-19.

They set off as equals tomorrow morning, hoping to negotiate 36 holes of qualifying with just five spots in the Open field on offer from each of the four courses.

Twenty-three Yorkshiremen are in action, either through their DP World Tour status or having successfully negotiated regional qualifying last Monday.

West Lancs, being the closest of the four, has the highest density of Yorkshire players with Willett joined by fellow Tour professionals Ben Schmidt, Marcus Armitage, Sam Bairstow, Joe Dean and Joshua Berry.

Six club pros made it to final qualifying at West Lancs: Richard Law (Normanton), Ben Hutchinson (Howley Hall), Keir Stockdale (Lindrick), Nick Raybould (Hull) Will Whiteoak (Bingley St Oves) and Gareth Davies (Abbeydale).

Seven Yorkshire players face 36 holes at Dundonald Links on the Ayrshire Coast. Tom Curtis (Spofforth) made it all the way once before, at Carnoustie in 2018, and looks to do so again, alongside other club pros in George Mason (Wath) and Marcus Brigham (Malton and Norton).

South Yorkshire’s Challenge Tour player Bailey Gill thought his chance had gone when he lost a play-off at Lindrick last week, but as a reserve he has been given a second chance.

Amateurs Oliver Cage (Moortown) and Alex Boyes (Cleveland) are also in the field.

Barclay Brown (Hallamshire) is another to have qualified for the Open via final qualifying before, doing so at Hollinwell four years ago. The Stanford graduate goes again on Tuesday at Royal Cinque Ports on the south coast alongside Lindrick qualifier Sam Rook.

And Rotherham amateur Lucas Martin chances his arm at Burnham and Berrow.

One big name who won’t be at final qualifying is two-time major winner Dustin Johnson, whose name was on the list for Dundonald Links but was withdrawn on Sunday.
