The layout of the centre has been reconfigured, resulting in a fantastic new open-plan gym space that is about three times the size of the previous one and contains a range of new equipment.

The reception area has also been upgraded, along with a new spinning studio.

Customers having assessments or taking part in fitness programmes with consultants will be able to use equipment provided in the spinning room, so that they are away from the main gym area.

There are also two new office rooms which will ensure that those customers having a private referral discussion can do so in private. It is hoped these spaces will provide a much better customer experience.

Prior to lockdown, the football pitches behind the centre had been improved and there is now five-a-side 3G pitches available to hire at the site as well.

Coun Jacquie Speight, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, said: “The improved facilities look absolutely fantastic.”

Featherstone ward councillor Graham Isherwood added:”My ward colleagues and I have been campaigning for this refurbishment for a number of years.

“I was at the official opening and the facilities are fabulous - as good, if not better, than any I’ve seen in private gyms. All the equipment is brand new and there is a lovely ambience. I can’t praise it highly enough.”

The centre, along with others in the district, will re-open to existing members from April 12, 2021 in line with current government guidance.
