Karl Burke hoping Venetian Sun can shine at Newmarket
KARL BURKE’S Venetian Sun is bidding for back-to-back Group 1 victories when she lines up in the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup Stakes at Newmarket today.
Clifford Lee’s mount is unbeaten in all of her five starts at six furlongs and after failing to see out the 1,000 Guineas trip has gone on to win the Group Two Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock followed by the top level Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot in June.
She is set to face ten older rivals today in a high-class renewal and gets weight from them all, including Almeraq, the horse nearly killed in a fall which put a temporary halt to jockey Jim Crowley’s career at York last summer, who has to give 9lb to the Burke runner, while fellow three-year-old Mission Central concedes 3lb.
Burke said: “She takes her racing very well, she’s very professional, as you can see when you see her on the track.

"We’ve been very happy with her. She did a real good piece of work at the end of last week and did a little breeze yesterday.
“She did show a little bit in season yesterday, which we’ve never really noticed before, so we’ll keep an eye on that, but she hasn’t shown any signs this morning, so hopefully that’s nothing.
“I’d be lying if I said it didn’t (concern me). But some fillies seem to cope with it and it means nothing. Others, it can affect them.
"I’m hoping that she doesn’t show any signs of being in season now for the rest of the rest of the week, but it’s something that we will monitor.”
