Rio Olympics 2016: Huddersfield ace Marcus Ellis claims doubles bronze alongside Chris Langridge

Huddersfield's Marcus Ellis held off a determined Chinese fightback to claim a shock bronze medal alongside partner Chris Langridge at the Rio Olympic Games.

The British pair dominated a tense decider to win in three games against Chinese pair Biao Chai and Wei Hong 21-18, 19-21, 21-10.

Ellis, 26, and Langridge had gone into the men's double competition in Brazil ranked 24th in the world rankings and with an outside shot at bringing home a medal for Team GB.

Two wins out of three group matches sent the duo into the quarter-finals where they beat Japanese pair Kenichi Hayakawa and HiroyukiEndo in straight games.

Hopes of a surprise gold medal were ended in the semi-finals against Chinese duo Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan.

But Ellis and Langridge picked themselves up to record a a shock win over Fu and Zhang's teammates Chai and Hong to claim the third spot on the podium.

The first two games were tight affairs. Ellis and Langridge sneaked ahead to the jubilation of the British support but their Chinese opponents fought back to edge a close second.

Ellis and Langridge raced ahead in the decider, however, taking seven of the first eight points.

And the British duo held on before wrapping up victory with a Hawk-Eye appeal on match point.

Ellis has reached a career high of 18 in the world doubles rankings and won the English National Badminton Championships with Langridge in 2015 and 2016.
