There is talk that slow start has already ruined hopes of achieving the top-four spot – after 23 rounds – that Anderson deems imperative to win the title.

But talking to The Yorkshire Post, he insisted: “We can still get that. There’s 20 games left. Get 20 wins, that’s 40 points. We might be minor premiers. As for pressure, I feel it for myself more than anything.

“I’m confident when we get out there and this group of players get that first win, when they grind it out, that we will be flying.

“We just need that bit of confidence more than anything.”

Huddersfield have certainly improved with each performance so far since their opening day 19-0 defeat at home to Hull FC.

They fell 24-16 at Wigan before losing 28-24 at Leeds Rhinos on Thursday having battled back from 18-0 down to take the lead late on.

“We looked like a serious team when we came back against Leeds and to score 24 points at Headingley and get in front you should come away with it,” added Anderson. “But we had one or two little instances where errors or poor decisions saw it go away from us.

“We have got to keep working hard – hard work makes you lucky – stick to what we want to achieve and stay patient.

“But we have to be more ruthless, too.”

Widnes picked up their first win of the season with an emphatic 58-16 rout of previously unbeaten Wakefield Trinity Wildcats on Sunday.

Kevin Brown, the former Huddersfield and England stand-off, was to the fore.

Anderson conceded: “Denis (Betts) has got them playing well and they had Kev Brown back which is a big difference to them.

“He’s got the ball on a string at the minute and playing well.

“He’s key to a lot of things they do.

“We have to be aware of that.”

Meanwhile, Anderson, promoted from Huddersfield assistant when Nathan Brown was sacked in July 2012, is out of contract in November but there is no news yet on a new deal.

Super League coach of the year in 2013 after leading them to the League Leaders’ Shield, he said: “That will happen when it happens. I’m not worried about that. Results will take care of it.”

Castleford Tigers’ Scott Moore is doubtful for Friday’s game with Wigan after the ex-England hooker was ordered to face tonight’s disciplinary panel.

He is charged with Grade B “dangerous contact to the limbs” of Mose Masoe in last week’s
21-14 loss at St Helens while Saints’ Travis Burns will appear for a Grade B reckless high tackle on Justin Carney and Kyle Amor is up on a Grade C “dangerous contact to the head, neck or spinal column” of Jordan Tansey.
