Bradford Bulls axe head coach Francis Cummins

BRADFORD BULLS have axed head coach Francis Cummins and his assistant Lee St Hilaire - with the relegation-threatened club having already started the process of finding their replacements.

The Bulls made the move to part company with Cummins and St Hilaire just a day after their hefty 46-18 First Utility Super League loss at Salford, which has left the Odsal outfit with a mountain to climb to stave off the drop with 11 matches to go.

As it stands, Bradford are eight points adrift of safety and are already being linked with a move for former head coach Brian Noble, who preceded over the club’s glory years at the start of the noughties.

Bradford-born Noble was appointed Bulls head coach in November 2000, guiding the club to two Minor Premiership titles, victory in three Grand Finals in 2001, 2003 and 2005, the Rugby League Challenge Cup in 2003 and to three World Club Championships in 2002, 2004 and 2006.

On the decision to sack Cummins and St Hilaire, a Bradford spokesperson said: “This is a decision which has not been made lightly and Bradford Bulls would like to thank both Francis and Lee for their efforts over the years.”

Captain Matt Diskin has been placed in temporary charge ahead of Friday’s visit of Hull KR, under the guidance of managing director Steve Ferres.

Cummins, 37, joined Bradford from Leeds in 2010 as assistant to coach Mick Potter and took over from the Australian when he left at the end of the 2012 season.

The Bulls narrowly missed out on the play-offs in 2013, but suffered a major blow just before the start of this season when the club were docked six points for going into administration.

Their appeal against the points deduction was knocked back last week with the club now the short-priced favourites along with London to fall into the Kingstone Press Championship in time for next season.

The spokesperson added: “Both have worked under difficult circumstances during their time here but the club recognises that a change of direction is required.

“The board of directors has the utmost respect for both Francis and Lee and wish them well with their futures.”
