Castleford star joins Catalans as Giants' Wood moves to The Jungle

CASTLEFORD TIGERS scrum-half Brent Sherwin today made a shock switch to Super League basement club Catalans Dragons - with Huddersfield Giants half-back Kyle Wood coming in as his replacement on a month's loan deal.

The 32-year-old has joined the injury-hit Dragons to the end of the season and is likely to make his debut for them in Saturday's home game against Salford.

Sherwin had missed just two Super League games for Castleford this season, starting all but one and featuring in Castleford's 40-24 loss at Harlequins on Sunday.

But the experienced Australian, who joined from Canterbury Bulldogs in 2008, has often struggled to deliver his finest form during his stay in West Yorkshire and he was not going to be offered a new deal for 2011.

Catalans turned to him though after failing to secure the short-term signature of Melbourne Storm half-back Brent Finch.

The Dragons have been searching for a playmaker since Adam Mogg returned to Australia in March and had even contemplated bringing Shane Perry back for a second stint after releasing him at the end of last season.

Sherwin, who scored two tries in Castleford's 34-18 win over the Catalans at Murrayfield earlier this month and was also in the side that won at Gilbert Brutus Stadium in March, is due to link up with his new team-mates this afternoon and train with them for the first time tomorrow morning.

Sherwin will be able to play in the Dragons' Carnegie Challenge Cup quarter-final at Batley on Saturday week because he missed Castleford's fourth-round defeat by Barrow through injury.

Tigers chief executive Richard Wright said: "Brent leaves with our best wishes.

"Catalans approached us a few weeks ago about taking him on board and they again enquired this week.

"Brent's contract with us was at its end at the close of the current season and although he would have liked to have stayed he could see the positives in this move.

"He wasn't in our plans for 2011, so the timing was right and this move will give him a chance to stake his claim for a longer deal with the Dragons.

"He has put in some match-winning performances for us and has played at times through injury but we are looking to make changes for next season and we couldn't have stood in his way when this opportunity arose."

Wood, 20, has yet to break through at Huddersfield but has previously played for Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and Sheffield Eagles while spending most of this season on a dual-registration deal at Batley Bulldogs.

"Kyle is a highly regarded, exiting young player who is keen to make his mark in Super League," added Wright.

"We have brought in an immediate replacement and we will be exploring other options over the next couple of weeks."

Wood is set for his debut at home to Hull FC on Sunday.
