Improving Castleford Tigers prop Tyla Hepi has seen the second part of his contract “triggered” meaning he will remain at Wheldon Road in 2021.

The powerful forward initially signed a one-year deal after joining from Toulouse Olympique last autumn but that had a further one year option.

After a number of impressive appearances in his debut campaign with Castleford, the club has now opted to take that up.

New Zealander Hepi, 27, has been a regular since Super League resumed in August and, though Tigers have struggled for form, his robust displays have shown he has what it takes to compete at the top level.

“It's been a roller coaster of a season on and off-field obviously with the influence of COVID,” he said.

“But I’ve enjoyed the last few months of footy. I'll keep my feet on the ground and keep working hard and getting better every day for the team.

“I have some goals I’d like to achieve next season and ultimately that will ensure I’m a better player for 2021.”

An aggressive, confrontational-style forward, Hepi has made eight appearances.

Head coach Daryl Powell said: “It’s great news that Tyla agreed to extend his stay at the club.

“He, alongside Jacques O’Neill, has been a real positive sign during this tough period we have been going through.

“His energy and enthusiasm for the game is outstanding and I look forward to seeing him improve as he thrives in Super League.”
