Castleford Women put 60 points past York

Castleford Tigers Women made a great start to the 2018 season with 11 tries and over 60 points over York City Knights to win 0-62.

Following that result many questions are being asked about the West Yorkshire outfit and how far they are capable of going in this year’s competition. Many of those will be answered next Sunday as they face the current title holders Bradford in what promises to be a cracking encounter.

Castleford will be up for that game and will want to make a similar start to the one they made against York which saw them go 6-0 up in the opening minute.

Alex Wallace’s first try kicked off a devastating 15 minute spell for the Tigresses which saw them go 24-0 up. A try from Grace Field and a couple from England international Katie Hepworth put the visitors in a commanding position.

However, it was at this point when the fire had seemed to go out. York began to enjoy longer spells of possession and even threatened the Tigresses with a couple of rapid attacks down the right wing. York’s Natalie Carr was becoming a particular nuisance for the visitors who were kept on their toes whenever the winger had the ball in her clutches.

Castleford rediscovered their fire with moments to go until the interval. Incredibly, that was still enough time to produce one more try as Tara Stanley got her name on the scoresheet.

The second half started the same way as the first. Within minutes Kirsty Higo extended Castleford’s lead to 36-0.

Next to score was Emma Lumley however her four pointer was a bittersweet one. A collision during play saw Lumley sustain an injury to her ankle which forced an immediate substitution. Lumley now faces a race against time with the next game only a few days away.

The injury didn’t stop the visitors from losing any momentum as proved by Stanley who earned her second try of the game.

Grace Field, Olivia Grace and Georgie Hetherington added further salt to the wounds as Castleford ran away with an immense 62-0 victory.

Next up for the Tigresses is a clash with the current champions Bradford Bulls Women. Following their successive defeats, Bradford will no doubt want the two points. Castleford meanwhile, will be hoping to add yet more misery to the Bulls season.
