RANGI CHASE insists he has learned from past misdemeanours and will not throw away another lifeline at Super League leaders Castleford Tigers.

The former Man of Steel is undoubtedly one of the competition’s most gifted players but has had a chequered career, too, with a raft of past disciplinary issues.

The latest of those came earlier this season when he was dropped by Castleford coach Daryl Powell after an internal investigation into an off-field incident.

The former England stand-off was left out for the next three matches, Samoa star Benny Roberts instead seizing his own chance in the playmaker’s role.

Indeed, Roberts has started the last eight games, scoring six tries along the way to help underpin the West Yorkshire club’s dazzling form, with Chase restricted to a handful of appearances off the bench.

However, he is set to make his first start since February tomorrow night when Castleford head to Huddersfield Giants.

Roberts suffered an injury in Saturday’s record-breaking 54-4 win over champions Wigan Warriors.

Prolific scrum-half Luke Gale is also missing as he is in Sydney for England Test against Samoa this weekend along with club-mates Zak Hardaker and Mike McMeeken.

Referring to that previous incident, Chase said: “It was my own mistake, but it’s gone now.

“I had to work hard to get it back and I have. I had my chance before and I let it slip. This is a team you’ve got to work hard for and you have to earn your spot.

“I have learned that lesson. I have gone through that, come through it and am taking my chance now.

“You have to perform well to play in this team. That’s what good teams are about.”

New Zealand-born Chase, 31, is in his second stint at Wheldon Road having re-joined last July following a short spell out of the game battling depression.

He has shown flashes of his brilliance in a series of cameo roles of late but is relishing taking control from the start tomorrow night when he could be paired with Tom Holmes, the 21-year-old rookie recalled from a loan spell at Batley Bulldogs.

“I just love being here and being part of the squad, whether I’m playing five minutes or the full game,” said Chase, who made more than 100 appearances with Castleford before being sold for £115,000 to Salford Red Devils at the end of 2013.

“Benny unfortunately got injured Saturday. Hopefully it’s not too bad, because we need him, but it opens up an opportunity for me. I have just got to step up. I am keen. I am enjoying my footy and ready for any challenge that comes my way. I am looking forward to it.

“Hopefully I can keep doing what I am doing and playing my part in our squad.

“I was going to get a shot anyway because Galey is away. I don’t know what will happen, but it is going to take a big performance from us at Huddersfield as a whole team.”

Powell has recalled prop Andy Lynch while Kevin Larroyer, the former Hull KR second-row who has been on loan at Bradford Bulls, could debut along with ex-Leeds Rhinos utility Alex Foster.

Huddersfield picked up their first win in 10 games with a shock victory at Leeds last week.
