The Tigers played their last league match in March, beating St Helens 28-14 but with the club now earning no gate receipts, Powell has supported the decision to place staff on furlough leave.

“It protects companies, no business can get through a period like this when they are getting minimal income and then having to pay staff,” he said.

“It is a sensible decision.

“I thought it was an outstanding thing that the Government did in regard to furlough and they showed their commitment to helping businesses and individuals.

"It is important we look after everybody in the country and come out of this in a stronger position.”

Meanwhile, Castleford have stated that any details of salary cuts will remain private.

It has been reported by League Express that Tigers players earning below £50,000 a year will take a 20 per cent cut while those above that amount will have their wage cut by 30 per cent.

The report goes on to say that the cuts could remain in place until November with the situation set to be reviewed in June.

The revision of the cuts will depend on factors such as how long the Government furlough scheme will remain in place and when the season can resume.

A club spokesperson said: “Financial matters between the club and it’s staff, including players, are private. Our aim during the lockdown is to make use of the Government’s job retention scheme.”
