Goole Vikings sign former England international to continue eye-catching recruitment

Ex-England back-rower Brett Ferres has become Goole Vikings' latest high-profile signing ahead of their inaugural League 1 campaign.

The 38-year-old, who won the Super League Grand Final with Leeds Rhinos in 2017, joins fellow former England international Jamie Shaul at the Vikings.

Ferres has spent the past five seasons in the lower leagues with Featherstone Rovers and Doncaster after representing Bradford Bulls, Wakefield Trinity, Castleford Tigers, Huddersfield Giants and Leeds in Super League.

The veteran forward – a 2013 Dream Team member after helping Huddersfield win the League Leaders' Shield – earned 16 caps for his country.

“I think this is a very special opportunity for us to be part of something unique," said Ferres after joining Scott Taylor's new squad at Goole.

"It is going to be great for the town and I'm looking forward to the journey ahead.

"I was really impressed with James (Clark) and Scott's enthusiasm and vision for the club, and I am really excited to be a part of that.

"I've been fortunate to play at a high level for a long time and I’m keen to bring that experience to the club and help some of the younger players develop. I can't wait for the challenge.”

Ferres will also join the likes of Thomas Minns and Reece Dean at Victoria Pleasure Ground next year.

"Brett Ferres signing for the Vikings is another notable coup for the club," said Taylor. "We are really pleased to get this one done.

"He has achieved it all in the game over a fantastic career, including representing his country, so he will bring a huge amount of experience and leadership to our group, which will be fantastic for our younger players.

"Brett is a natural leader. He talks well and is a winner. His presence will not only lift the players around him but I think alongside our other new signings, it will also continue to raise the excitement around the whole club for the season ahead."
