Halifax Panthers plunged into uncertainty after High Court ruling
Halifax Panthers have been plunged into uncertainty after being hit with a winding-up order, marking another bleak day for the Championship.
The club confirmed the outcome of a High Court hearing on Monday, bringing an abrupt halt to a long-running dispute with HMRC.
In a statement, the Panthers acknowledged the disappointment the news will bring to supporters, players, staff and sponsors, while stressing that liquidation does not necessarily spell the end of the club.
The development raises fresh questions for the Championship following the decision to deny Featherstone Rovers entry.
The second tier had to be reshaped before a ball was kicked this season after the Post Office Road club fell into administration and failed in their bid to make the start line under a new consortium.
League officials are now expected to assess the implications for the competition structure and fixtures as clarity is sought over Halifax's immediate future, with the Panthers scheduled to host Sheffield Eagles this Sunday.
"Following today’s High Court hearing, Halifax Panthers has been placed into compulsory liquidation," read a club statement.
"We know this news will be very disappointing for our supporters, players, staff and sponsors. The winding-up relates to a long-running dispute with HMRC, and despite efforts to find a solution, we were unable to conclude a deal in time to prevent this outcome.

"As part of this process, the directors are no longer in control of the company, and responsibility now passes to the Official Receiver, who will oversee the company's affairs and determine the next steps.
"Discussions will now begin around the future of the club. Our focus is on working with all parties to secure the best possible outcome and a sustainable future for Halifax Panthers.
"This is not necessarily the end of the club, and we will provide further updates as soon as we can. Thank you for your continued support."
In response to the ruling, the governing body said: "The RFL is aware of the High Court’s decision surrounding Halifax Panthers.
"The Board of the RFL will meet to consider all options this week.
"Our thoughts are with the players, coaches, club staff and fans that will be affected on hearing today’s news.
"A further update will be made in due course."
