Hunslet 18 Workington 22: Losing run drags on as Hunslet fall short

Hunslet came close to ending their 11-game losing sequence with a spirited second-half performance as winger Richie Barnett scored two tries.

But Town probably deserved the points after a dominant first 40 minutes with winger Brett Carter opening the scoring as he over-powered Richie Barnett in a drive for the try-line.

Jarrod Samutt was Town’s architect with boot and hand although Hunslet took the lead as Simon Brown’s kick saw Danny Grimshaw score with Brown adding the goal.

Centre Scott Akehurst regained the advantage for Town reacting quickly to a loose ball after a kick through and minutes later Brett Phillips dived through a crowd of players to cap a period of sustained pressure

A piece of magic as Sammut easily broke the Hawks defence was completed as Perry Whiteley gathered to ensure Town’s 16-point lead at the break.

A brighter opening to the second-half gave the Hunslet fans some hope as Richie Barnett’s interception of Elliot Miller’s pass gave the winger a 70-metre run to the line with Brown’s kick reducing the deficit to 10 points.

Danny Ansell’s weighted kick was gathered by Barnett for his second try with Brown’s huge touchline conversion reducing the deficit to only four points.
