Hunslet Hawks 18 Dewsbury Rams 6: Leeds recruits help Hawks surprise Rams

Hunslet’s season finally kicked off with a win against Dewsbury Rams at the South Leeds Stadium.

Simon Brown kicked four penalties and one conversion with tries either side of the break from George Flanagan and Vinny Finigan.

The visiting Rams were hotly tipped before the season but the Hawks put on an impressive performance both on and off the ball.

The home side bolstered their squad midweek with the arrival of three players on dual-registration from the Leeds Rhinos and looked all the stronger for their arrival.

Ryan Hepworth scored the Rams’ only try with Tom Hemingway kicking the extras for the visitors, who struggled to finish their plays despite having plenty of possession and chances to score. The Rams’ defence at times looked shaky though with mistakes and ill-discipline costing them dearly in the end.
