Inspired Hood helps seal victory

LIAM HOOD recovered from a hamstring injury to give an inspirational performance as Hunslet swept aside South Wales in a 13-try romp.

Former Leeds Rhinos hooker Hood scored two tries, had one disallowed and set up five more. There was a hat-trick from full back Jimmy Watson, and Andy Ballard kicked 11 goals.

With just one win from their previous 13 games, the Welshmen had a lot of catching up to do but they were 10 points down in as many minutes, Watson sprinting to the line in the first minute. Then livewire Hood crossed straight from a play-the-ball and Ballard added the conversion.

After Hood had a try disallowed, his shrewd kick through was gathered by centre Aston Wilson, who collected the third try on the half hour.

Ballard tagged on the goal and then converted a try by David March. Hood grabbed his second try by following up his own kick to make the half-time score 26-0.

The second half was even more one-sided as Liam Mackay and John Oakes quickly joined in the try spree and Hood created two more for Watson and one each for Wilson and Lewis Reed. James Houston and Oakes added further tries and Ballard’s reliable kicking increased South Wales’ woes.
