Leeds Rhinos 8 Catalans Dragons 16: Hosts fluff lines to leave Headingley play-off tie in doubt
Of all the permutations heading into the penultimate round, few had considered a Catalans Dragons win.
Thursday was supposed to be the night that Leeds Rhinos secured a top-four finish and booked a home play-off tie for the first time since 2017.
The Rhinos went into the game buoyed by a five-match winning run and even had second-placed Wigan Warriors in their sights.
But after delivering arguably their worst performance of the season, the Rhinos now face the prospect of finishing as low as fifth.
That nightmare scenario could become reality if St Helens beat Leigh Leopards on Friday night.
For all of Brad Arthur's talk about bringing play-off rugby back to Headingley, Leeds fluffed their lines on the night that mattered most.
The Rhinos still have time to retrieve the situation on their own terms but on this evidence, they will need Jake Connor fit and firing for next week's game at Wigan and beyond.
Connor missed his first game of the year on Thursday and his absence was keenly felt by the misfiring Rhinos, albeit in the face of an inspired Catalans defensive effort rarely seen this season.

It took Leeds 64 minutes to break the Dragons down through Ryan Hall but they lacked composure throughout as they finished their home regular campaign on a flat note.
To extend their season at Headingley and give their supporters a long-overdue play-off night, the Rhinos must demonstrate their powers of recovery after a bitter blow.
Any notion of a walkover was quickly dispelled as the lowly Dragons defended their errors with the intensity of a side with everything on the line.
After seeing off a sustained period of direct running and strong carries from the Rhinos, Catalans hit their hosts with a sucker punch on the back of a Theo Fages 40/20.

Leeds failed to see off the initial danger and eventually paid the price for a defensive lapse, Ugo Tison sneaking over from dummy-half to score the first try against Arthur's men in 176 minutes.
The Rhinos were indebted to a try-saving effort by Lachie Miller to deny Bayley Sironen following another 40/20 from Fages but they just could not get going in attack.
Jarrod O'Connor dropped the ball cold after a threatening burst by Miller on a kick return and Jack Sinfield was guilty of overcooking a pass to Chris Hankinson with the tryline begging.
A high tackle by Sam Lisone on Fages allowed Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet to nudge the Dragons 8-0 ahead just before the break – and there was no sign of Leeds rediscovering their composure in the early stages of the second half.

The Rhinos were attacking with scrambled brains and their ill-discipline continued to give Catalans a leg-up, a ball steel offering Aispuro-Bichet the chance to kick another penalty.
The momentum turned in Leeds' favour after Fouad Yaha dropped Brodie Croft's high kick, helped by a series of penalties.
Referee Jack Smith eventually lost patience and sent Romain Navarrete to the sin-bin for a high shot on Croft – yet the Rhinos only became more frenetic.
Leeds finally stayed calm long enough to execute a play when Hall produced a spectacular finish from Croft's kick and appeared primed to complete the comeback, Morgan Gannon denied just short of the line after storming through.
But Catalans clinched a stunning win with a slice of fortune that they had earned through their defensive heroics.
Luke Keary's drop-goal attempt hit the post but the half-back – who together with Fages rediscovered his mojo for the night – pounced on the rebound to knock the ball from Miller's grasp, allowing Julian Bousquet to touch down.
Croft gave the Rhinos a glimmer of hope three minutes from time when he ghosted over.
However, Miller rushed his conversion attempt and sent it wide to round off a miserable night for Leeds.
