Halifax head coach Richard Marshall maintains he has never had any regrets leaving Super League Warrington Wolves.

The 41-year-old enjoyed an extended period of success with his hometown club as one of Tony Smith’s assistants, including helping them to Challenge Cup glory.

He left, though, to take on a head coach role of his own with Championship part-timers Halifax three seasons ago and now makes his first return to his old club in today’s televised Qualifiers tie.

Warrington – Grand Finalists and Challenge Cup finalists only last season – have already beaten Super League rivals Widnes Vikings and Catalans Dragons in the Middle Eights and they give Halifax a 40-point start with many bookmakers.

Marshall said: “They have had a difficult season, but on their day they can beat any side, not just in Super League but in the world, as they showed when they beat Brisbane Broncos at the start of the year.

“They put 50 on Catalans, who are a good Super League team themselves, last weekend so that tells you everything you need to know.

“We’re going to go and play with enthusiasm and challenge ourselves.

“It’s exciting for us as a club; for all the players, and maybe more so for me and (players) Simon Grix and James Saltonstall, who have all been there in recent years.

“I really enjoyed my time there and I learned a lot from Tony, but in hindsight it was definitely the right time for me to move on and take on my own challenge with Halifax.

“We’ve a week off next week so we’ll be making sure we’ve nothing left in the tank.”

The West Yorkshire club, still waiting to get off the mark, are without full-back Will Sharp, given a one-game ban for tripping, and injured Mitch Cahalane.
