McGuire’s late try completes Rhinos’ recovery

Danny McGuire fittingly made his mark on his testimonial match with a late try to complete a remarkable comeback and earn Leeds a 24-24 draw with Bradford at Headingley Carnegie.

Jarrod Sammut and Brett Kearney grabbed two tries apiece and Jamie Foster kicked four conversions as the Bulls led 24-14 with 14 minutes left to play.

Leeds had trailed 18-0 before hitting back with two tries from new signing Joe Vickery before half-time while Rob Burrow and Ryan Hall added second-half tries to set up an exciting finish which was capped by McGuire’s late score.

St Helens captain Paul Wellens and former England winger Ade Gardner scored two tries each to help Saints to a 42-12 win over Wakefield in the Jon Wilkin testimonial match at Langtree Park.

Early tries from James Roby and Willie Manu gave Saints a 10-0 lead before Isaac John replied for the visitors. Lance Hohaia and Lee Gaskell grabbed second-half tries for the hosts and Lee Smith scored the Wildcats’ other try.

Wakefield’s Tim Smith was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

Full-back Greg Eden scored a try in each half to help Hull KR to a 28-18 win over city rivals Hull FC at the KC Stadium.

The Robins led 22-6 at half-time thanks to tries from Omari Caro, Craig Hall, Cory Paterson and Eden, with Tom Briscoe responding for the home side.

Hull FC rallied in the second half, with newcomers Ben Galea, a former Rovers captain, and Jason Crookes scoring their first tries for the club but Eden grabbed his second 10 minutes from the end to seal their fate.

Hooker Shaun Lunt, one of the heroes of Leeds’s Grand Final win in October, marked his return to Huddersfield with a hat-trick of tries as the Giants came from 12-0 down to beat Widnes 36-12 at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Early tries from Joe Mellor and Danny Craven gave the Vikings the perfect start, but Lunt pulled a try back before the break and England centre Leroy Cudjoe was twice among the scorers as the home side dominated the second half.

New signing Todd Carney scored two tries as Castleford came from 10-0 down to beat Featherstone Rovers 20-10.

Melbourne Storm will have a contested training session with Championship club Halifax as part of their preparations for their World Club Challenge meeting with Leeds next month.

The Australian champions are flying out of Melbourne on February 11 ahead of the February 22 game with Leeds.
