Oldham 21 Sheffield Eagles 20: Late drop goal brings down Eagles

SHEFFIELD EAGLES let slip a half-time lead to lose 21-20 at Oldham.

The South Yorkshire club led 12-6 at the break, but fell away in the second half.

The Eagles actually outscored the hosts – four tries to three – but came up short in the kicking game.

Nick Fozard got the first of his two tries after six minutes, converted by Cory Aston, who also added the extras to Menzie Yere’s effort.

At 12-0, Sheffield looked in control but Liam Johnson cut the deficit with a try converted by Lewis Palfrey.

And it was 12-12 in the 46th minute when Palfrey added the extra two points to Michael Ward’s try.

Two minutes later, Oldham took the lead for the first time in the game with a Kenny Hughes try, converted by Palfrey who also added a penalty.

Sheffield staged a late rally with tries from Fozard and Matt James, but Oldham earned victory with a 78th-minute Palfrey drop goal.

London Broncos produced their best performance of the season to defeat Batley 32-8.

The Broncos did not look back after Wales winger Rhys Williams scored two tries. Other tries followed through Ben Hellewell, Eddie Battye, Elliot Kear, Mark Ioane and William Barthau, who kicked two goals.

Batley’s only points came from a Dave Scott try and two goals from Pat Walker.
